The story so far
In 2023, I was working full-time as a design engineer and started dealing with RSI related pain after long days at the computer. I decided to switch to a split keyboard (the Kinesis 360 Advantage) which meant spending time each day learning to type all over again. At first, I used a tool called Monkeytype. It was great for building speed and accuracy, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was focusing on something meaningless: random words and quotes.
Typing started to feel like a form of meditation. If I was going to practice every day, I wanted that meditation to be focused on God’s Word. So I began typing through the Psalms, copying passages from Bible Gateway into my notes app. After typing the first 120 Psalms, I realized I was spending too much time checking my accuracy, looking back and forth, and finding my place again.
That’s when I snapped and realized I could build something specifically for Christians: a program for typing through Scripture that protected focus, removed as much friction as possible, and gave me insight into my typing performance over time.
I shared the first version on Reddit, it resonated with other believers, and in 2024, Janet, one of the earliest Type the Word users, found that post and decided to type through the entire Bible. Her consistency, along with the consistency of so many others, has inspired me to keep improving TTW ever since. We’re coming up on 1 million verses typed, 6 people have typed the entire Bible, and Janet and Alexander have typed the equivalent of over 2 Bibles each.
In 2025, I started thinking about how this could serve Christian schools. Teachers need typing software that helps students build a practical skill, but the available options often come with tradeoffs: questionable ads, uncontrolled content, over-gamification, and software that doesn’t align with their values. Type the Word could offer something different: typing practice centered on the Bible that supports biblical literacy and Scripture memory. I’m just getting started, but the goal will always be to serve Christian schools as they train up the next generation to know and love God.

The mission
Type the Word’s mission is for all Christian children to learn to type in God’s Word and exit high school with a book of the Bible memorized.
About Josh and Izzy
I’m Josh Wootonn, the builder behind Type the Word, and my lovely wife, Izzy, is its designer.
Outside of Type the Word, Izzy and I are part of Ambassador Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I serve in the kindergarten ministry, Izzy creates graphics for the church, and together we lead a small group in our home.
I started Type the Word with a conviction: my life is brief, the next generation matters, and I want to spend the time I have serving them.

Small tech by design with God-sized goals
Type the Word is intentionally a small software company. This helps us stay true to our values, while also pursuing the dream: a generation of students who know God more and have key passages of scripture memorized.

Plurality of leadership
At the moment, Type the Word is mainly led my me (Josh Wootonn), but I don't believe leading is a solo sport. As TTW grows, my goal is to share this stewardship with a board of other believers for wisdom and accountability. I learned and grew to love this value from my local church. Generous giving
Matthew 6:21 says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Because of this, Type the Word is committed to giving 5% of its profits to Bible translation organizations like Wycliffe Bible Translators and illumiNations.

For all Christian traditions
Type the Word is built to serve Christians across traditions, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox schools. Each school can choose the Bible translations and content its students have access to, keeping their experience aligned with the school's tradition and values.
